The Best Answer:
A frappe is an iced blended coffee beverage that wouldn’t be what it was without the addition of coffee! The real question is what type of coffee goes into the Frappe to make it what it is. Most frappes are made using espresso, although it’s also possible to use instant coffee or coffee capsules.
Do you love the taste of a delicious iced coffee drink in the summer? Or do you want to know if there is any coffee in your frappe? Well, then this post is for you!
I’ll be going over all of the most common types of frozen coffee drinks and giving my opinion on whether or not they have coffee in them. So let’s get started!
Does A Frappe Have Coffee In It?
In this blog post, I will be looking at different types of beverages commonly mistaken as containing no caffeine when they do contain a small amount. We will also discuss what constitutes a “coffee beverage” and why these drinks may still have coffee even though they don’t explicitly have “coffee” in their name.
What counts as a coffee beverage
A coffee beverage I not classified as any drink that contains caffeine. Many other drinks contain caffeine, like black tea and energy sodas. On the contrary, a coffee drink is classified as a drink that has been extracted from ground coffee beans of the plant Coffea. Coffee beans have been used to make drinks for over millennia by people all around the world.
Common coffee beverages include:
- Regular coffee – usually filtered coffee
- Espresso – coffee that results when extracted using a high-pressure portafilter espresso machine
- Instant coffee – soluble coffee granules
- Coffee capsules or pods – ground coffee meant to be used only with compatible capsule or pod machines
These are specific categories of coffee beverages from which many drinks derive! For example, many coffee drinks are espresso-based, such as cappuccinos, lattes, flat whites, macchiatos, mochas, etc. They might not have the word “coffee” in their name, but we all know they are coffee drinks.
However, certain drinks might confuse you! Let’s look at the frappe as an example.
What is a Frappe?
A frappe is a blended iced coffee drink that includes milk, coffee, syrups, cream, and ice. The word “frap” had existed for decades before Starbucks coined the term “Frappuccino”. According to Merriam-Webster, the word frappe means:
“to strike or break suddenly and violently, as with a sound,” or “to shape in a mold. to cover, coat, or surround completely with a smooth mixture of milk and flavoring syrups.”
In the case of Starbucks’s frappe blended beverage, this means that when you order a frappuccino, you are requesting an icy drink mixed with coffee, milk, chocolate chips, syrups, and other flavors.
Frappe vs Greek Frappe: What’s the difference?
A Greek frappe recipe uses instant coffee and cold water, while a recipe usually uses espresso and cold milk.
This difference makes a frappe more like a milkshake due to a blender, while a Greek frappe is a little thinner and is usually mixed using a hand mixer and topped with cold water and ice cubes.
What type of coffee goes into a Frappe?
Typically, most frappes are made by using espresso shots because of their thickness. Espresso shots are made by forcing around 200 degrees Fahrenheit water under high pressure through compacted ground coffee beans. They are thicker than American drip coffee or even Turkish-style coffee, which is why it works well for frappes.
However, the frappe should not be confused with a frappucino!
What is a Frappuccino?
It’s a delicious, cold drink to cool you down on a hot summer day!
A Frappuccino is the love child of ice cream and coffee. They are typically blended with milk, ice, espresso, sugar, and other ingredients, depending on the flavor.
The word Frappuccino came to be when it was created for Starbucks by Doug Rauch in 1995. The original recipe had very few ingredients, but it has since developed into many variations with flavors similar to their namesakes (i.e., strawberry for strawberries). For example, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Frappuccinos are often mistaken for actual cookies because of their resemblance.
Frappuccinos are one of the more expensive drinks at Starbucks but are extremely popular. Some of the more exotic flavors can cost anywhere from $4 to $5! Today, there are over 100 different Frappuccino flavors, many of which were created by customers who submitted their suggestions.
What type of coffee goes into a Frappuccino?
Frappuccino is a drink coined by Starbucks, and they are using a special roast to make it, the so-called Frap Roast. The Frap roast is a coffee powder, not exactly instant, coffee but it’s similar. The way it works is that you add water.
You can get this Frap roast in ground form, and then you mix it with water to make an iced coffee-like drink. Of course, it’s not espresso-based, so it won’t come out as strong as traditional espresso drinks such as lattes and cappuccinos, but the taste is pretty close.
You can also use it for hot drinks as it works similarly to instant coffee but be aware that since this is not its purpose, it will taste particularly bitter, and you’ll want to use it with some sugar or syrup.

How to make a Frappuccino at Home
If you’ve ever wondered how to make a Frappuccino at home, I can help. It’s easy!
The first step is to make sure you have the right ingredients.
For this recipe, I used Starbucks Frap Roast coffee (1/2 cup), Nestle Coffee-Mate French Vanilla liquid creamer (3/4 cups), white sugar (1/4 cup), and ice cubes (8).
To start, fill your blender up with ice to the top. Next, add 1 tbsp of both the sugar and creamer into the blender.
*Note: You may need more or less depending on how sweet you want it.*
Then, sprinkle in just enough coffee so that it covers up all the other ingredients inside. For me, this was about two spoonfuls worth. Close your lid tightly and blend for 25 seconds. Finally, take off the lid and add more ice cubes until your drink reaches the right consistency. Enjoy!
